The banker from Micanopy

George Jacob Avent was born on 8 August 1882 in Micanopy, a village in Alachua County, Florida, the son of William Marion Avent and Catharine 'Kate' Winecoff. His mother died in 1891, when he was eight, and his father in 1895.

His father's own story begins with a puzzle. In May 1849 a Robert Avent married Martha Cato in Autauga County, Alabama, and William was born there in August 1850. Robert appears in no record after the 1850 census. By 1858 Martha had married a Connecticut-born carriage maker named George S. Riggs and moved to Micanopy, where the 1860 census lists 'William Avant', aged nine, in their household. We think Robert was William's father, but no record says so outright.

George Jacob married Gertrude Luella Mundle, who was born in New York, and they raised four children in Jacksonville. He became president of the Florida National Bank in 1933 and died on 25 January 1942, aged 59. His Times-Union obituary calls him 'a native of Micanopy' and 'the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Marion Avent of that community'.

Luella lived until August 1964. Her obituary was headed 'Widow of Bank President Is Dead'.

How we know

  • Florida Times-Union obituary, 26 January 1942
  • Marriage record of Robert Avant and Martha Cato, Autauga County, Alabama, May 1849
  • 1850 census (Autauga County) and 1860 census (Micanopy, Florida)
  • 1880 census, which gives William's father as born in Virginia
  • Florida Times-Union, 8 August 1964

Confidence: probable – George Jacob and his father William are well documented; no record names Robert Avent as William's father, so that link rests on the marriage, the 1850 census and the 1880 census
