A weaver's son and a Catholic bride

Isaac Edwards was baptised on 14 December 1834 at St Mary's, Eccles, the son of John and Anne Edwards, with his father's trade given as weaver. John Edwards and Ann Kay had a large family, a dozen children in our records, and several died young.

Elizabeth Brennan was born on 24 June 1839 and baptised on 7 July at All Saints Catholic church, Barton upon Irwell, the daughter of Patrick Brennan and Frances Carter, who had married in Manchester in 1829. Patrick lived until 1885 and Frances until 1872.

Isaac and Elizabeth married in the third quarter of 1856 at Barton upon Irwell, but no church register entry for the wedding has turned up in either the Anglican or the Catholic records. A register-office wedding would suit a couple from different churches, though that is only a guess.

They had at least eight children. Catherine died in 1872 at the age of four, young Isaac about 1877, and Timothy in October 1892 at about fifteen. William Wilbraham, at least, was baptised a Catholic. Isaac died in January 1891 and Elizabeth about June 1909.

Confidence: probable – the baptisms and the children's records are solid, but the 1856 marriage is known only from the national index, and as far as we know no document links Isaac the weaver's son to Elizabeth directly
