Robert Mundle

Robert Mundle of the American Express

Robert Mundle was born on 30 January 1854 at Prescott, Ontario, the son of Edward and Mary Findlay Mundle. His Florida obituary describes his parents as 'of Scotland'. Mary Ann Findlay was born in Canada, and we think her parents came from Cambuslang, near Glasgow.

Robert spent thirty-seven years with the American Express Company in New York and rose to comptroller, retiring in February 1919. In Brooklyn he married Gertrude A. Van Pelt, who was born there on 10 October 1862, the daughter of George Van Pelt and Charlotte Smith. Gertrude's sister Charlotte married a Mr. Woodworth and lived on Long Island.

Robert and Gertrude moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in March 1919, where their daughter Gertrude Luella, the wife of George Avent, was already settled. They kept a summer home at Black Mountain, North Carolina. Robert died in a Jacksonville hospital on 26 January 1939, after a ten-day illness, aged 85. Gertrude died on 11 November 1949. Both are buried at Oaklawn Cemetery.
