Harry Wilt and Mary Ellen Brown of Fayette County
Harry Stehman Wilt was born in Lambertsville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, in 1872, the fourth of five children of Samuel Wilt and Mary Ellen Ackerman. Mary Ellen Brown was born on 25 June 1885 at Adah, in Fayette County, one of six children of Levi Brown and Mary Catherine Freeman.
They married in Fayette County in 1905 and had four children: Raymond, Harold Levi, Mary Kathryn and Gladys. The family lived around Brownsville.
Mary Ellen's grandmother, Rebecca Fisher Brown, is remembered in her 1891 obituary as the woman who ran Brown's Ferry on the Monongahela River for thirty-five to forty years. Her son Levi, Mary Ellen's father, was born in German Township in 1839.
Mary Ellen died on 29 October 1939 in Luzerne Township and was buried at Church Hill. The Uniontown Morning Herald printed her obituary the next day. Harry died on 22 January 1949 at a nursing home in Washington, Pennsylvania, and was buried at Church Hill three days later. His death certificate gives Brownsville as his home. A different Harry S. Wilt, born in York County, was once mixed up with him in online trees; the death certificate and headstone settle which man is ours.
