Samuel Wilt of Stonycreek

Samuel Wilt was born on 21 March 1831 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the son of Adam Wilt and Catherine Grove. Adam died in 1846 without a will, and the 1850 census finds Samuel, 19, in Stonycreek Township in the household of John A. Wilt, the family member who had taken out the letters of administration, along with their widowed mother and a sister.

On 19 May 1853 Samuel married Mary Ellen Ackerman in Shade Township. The county marriage register names both sets of parents: Adam Wilt and Catharine for the groom, and George and Mary Ackerman for the bride. They had at least five children, among them Harry Stehman Wilt.

Samuel died on 27 November 1898 and was buried at Lambertsville Cemetery. His headstone reads 'aged 67 years, 8 months, 6 days', which gives his birth date.

The line goes back to York County. Adam was born there on 12 July 1792, and a Moravian church record names his parents as Samuel and Anna Margaret. That older Samuel Wilt had moved to Somerset County by 1810 and died before 17 September 1830, when administration of his estate was granted to his son Michael and another man. His will, translated from German, names his wife Margaret and many children, Adam among them. A gravestone at Dover, York County, that online trees credit to him actually belongs to a man named Samuel Gross.
